Chorley recognised as one of the top districts in Lancashire for their climate change tackling initiatives.

Chorley Council has been placed second in Lancashire on the district Council Climate Emergency Scoreboard by Climate Emergency UK - a national body who assesses councils on actions they have taken towards net zero.

Being scored across 9 key criteria ranging from education, measuring, setting targets and commitment and integration, Chorley's Climate Strategy scored 38% overall with positive results in all sections - the highest being scored at 82% for collaboration and engagement.

The score was the second highest in Lancashire with 43% being the overall average across all district Councils.

Executive Cabinet Member for Customer, Streetscene and Environment at Chorley Council, Councillor Adrian Lowe, said: "We are delighted with this result. It is a real testament to all the hard work, commitment, and the green initiatives we, here in Chorley, have been implementing to support our environment, to tackle climate change, and to drive Chorley towards Net Zero by 2030.

"I'm particularly pleased by our excellent scoring when it comes to collaboration and engagement. We know that alone we cannot achieve Net Zero. It takes so many people across our communities - residents, businesses - working together to make positive change, and this score really highlights our commitment to raising awareness about the dangers of climate change and getting people on board to help.

"As always, scores like this are brilliant and we are incredibly proud of the achievement, but we know there is still much more to do. We will continue to invest and improve our strategies to become net zero by 2023".

In 2019, Chorley Council declared a climate emergency and set the ambitious target to become net zero by 2030. This strategy set out Chorley's vision for the future as a net zero carbon borough.
