Register a food business

It is a legal requirement for all food businesses to be registered with us. 

Who needs to register?

Any person or business who wishes to store, prepare, distribute or sell food needs to be registered with us. 

Premises include: 

  • restaurants 
  • cafes
  • hotels
  • shops
  • canteens,
  • market stalls
  • mobile catering vans
  • food delivery vans  
  • businesses run from home and pop up businesses.

Register a food business

To register a business please complete the register a food business form on the gov.uk website

New food businesses 

If you are thinking about starting a new food business, you must register at least 28 days before you start trading.

There are no fees for registering a food business.

Some businesses may be subject to approval, these include food manufacturers handling and producing items such as dairy, fish, eggs and meat products. If you think you may require approval, please email contact@chorley.gov.uk or call 01257 515151.

Report changes to your food business

If the nature of your business changes or if you stop operating a business, you will need to notify us. If you transfer ownership of your business to someone else, that person will need to contact us. Please email contact@chorley.gov.uk or  call 01257 515151 to let us know.
